It’s tempting to squeeze in some work at a coffee shop or airport while you’re on the go. Unfortunately, doing so can be risky - for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. Some of the biggest risks are basically a form of eavesdropping, where a stranger can read your transmissions and see what you are doing. These are commonly referred to as “man-in-the-middle” attacks and “snooping and sniffing.” When you connect to an unencrypted network, hackers may even be able to load malware onto your computer without you knowing it.
The best way to manage these risks is to use a virtual private network (“VPN”). I use Encryt.me’s inexpensive mini plan, but you should read reviews and talk to your friends and tech support team to find the one that’s right for your needs.
